Hi all,

I am using pfsense with Intel X520-DA2.

My idea is to connect the KPN fiber line directly to pfsense.

For that, I want to use the SFP module.

After research, I think I found a way how to make that, but I would like to ask your opinion.

I will use

FTU-TK01 FTU patchcover SC/APC

Compatible Brands: Intel

Connector: SC

I also need fiber cable about 25m

Could you please tell me if am I correct or not?

What type of fiber connection is active in your home?

Is that a "active optical network" (AON) or a "passive optical network" (XGS-PON).

Your SPF module needs to meet de specifications of your fiber connection, so be careful when selecting a SFP module.

Fiber converter

If I understand correct I have AON.

Your SFP module must meet the specifications below.

Source (pdf)

It looks like the selected SFP module meets those requirements.

Please note that you will also need a OneClick cleaner pen to clean the fiber connectors every time you connect the fiber.

Personally I don't see any advantages of using a SFP module to replace the NTU provided by KPN. Note that in case of support by customer service they might ask you to connect the Experia/KPN Box meaning you will have to use the normal NTU as well in such cases.

There is absolutely no improvement in speed or stability to be expected by using your own SFP module. I have placed a RJ45 SFP module in te SFP slot of my EdgeRouter 4 and just connect the NTU through a normal UTP cable.

I understand that, thank you.

In my head is only 1 reason for that.

That looks more interesting and nicer I would say.

I like to play with network things and everything that is related to that and making fiber lines at home is like a small adventure.

Also, I got the opinion that I can not use the SFP module.

Becouse I have GPON FTU-TK01 and that is old..

What do you think about that?

TK-01

Don't use a 60km SFP module, please. Chances are the diode in the exchange will be saturated causing errors. A 10km SFP will be sufficient: https://www.fs.com/de-en/products/37922.html?attribute=12263&id=560110.

I fully agree with this statement. It doesn't give any technical advantage to go directly on fiber.

The FTU isn't GPON. The FTU is both used in PON and AON networks. The NT you have is used for gigabit ethernet over fiber or GoF as KPN calls it. This falls under the AON network structure. TK01 isn't old either, it's the model that KPN Netwerk is currently placing with new connections on their network. A GN01 and TY-01 are old, TK01 is new.

Sorry, I don't understand yet about GPON part.

Does GPON future is built into SFP module?

Is the first photo in your previous message a photo of your NTU/ONT?

If that is the case then it seems you have a XGS-PON connection.

Nope it's not. They look very similar because it's the same mold but the XGS-PON has ‘Connection’ and ‘Alarm’ indicators instead of ‘Glas’ and ‘Ethernet’. The second photo does show an XGS-PON ONT however. 🤔

You don't have GPON so you won't need any GPON ONU/ONT. GPON isn't built in to any SFP. To be honest, if this stuff is entirely new to you it might be better to start off with the regular fiber NT paired with a 1Gbase-T SFP module for ethernet cabling. If it's a PON-connection not any SFP will work and connecting a regular SFP might interfere with other customers who are still on GPON and KPN might disconnect your connection and bill you for the damages.

I assume you mean the first photo in this message. That is the photo i referred to with "the first photo in your previous message".

Yeah, that was the photo I ment with ‘second’ as a message before shows an AON gigabit NT.

Sorry for creating that misunderstanding.

That first photo I took from the internet because I was thinking there is no difference.

I have that and I can see difference.

Sorry for that miss understanding.

Does that mean I have chances to use SFP module?

Then you have XGS-PON. You don't buy a regular SFP but an SFP+ because it's a technology rated for 10Gbit. There are some SFP's out there but very little chance of finding one that will work as XGS-PON technology is still quite new and KPN is probably one of the first to adopt this technology on this large scale.

Also it would be very expensive. AON SFP's go for about 10 euro's, GPON for about 60, XGS-PON without MAC for about the same, XGS-PON with MAC around 250 and only available outside Europe.

I think I found something that might work.

XGS-PON SFP+

GPON SFP

GPON SFP with MAC

XGS-PON&GPON Combo OLT SFP+

https://www.fs.com/de-en/products/162667.html

Neither of them wil work. You need XGS-PON, not GPON and you need an ONT/ONU, not an OLT. FS does not sell the product you need. I've been looking for it for a while and until now I have not seen any success stories about own ONT's on XGS-PON beside a Fritzbox 5590 with the Fritz SFP+ which unfortunately is vendor-locked and only works with AVM-products.

Geeking around is all fun and games but if you have no idea what you are looking for, especially on a PON-system everything you do wrong might affect other customers. Doesn't have to interfere with other connections, hence the ‘might’, but if it does happen I'll guarantee you that you'll have to draw the wallet and get a bill for costs made to figure out which connection was interfering.

Get a copper SFP+ and use the KPN ONT. Honest advise.

You broke my heart 😭

Neither of them wil work. You need XGS-PON, not GPON and you need an ONT/ONU, not an OLT.

But the first reference is a XGS-PON ONU?

Why do you think it won't work?

Below the specifications an ONT/ONU should meet.

Because it does not have any MAC-functions which relies on the router handling all of those parts. I know Pfsense is extensive but it's not that extensive as far as I know. The ONT that was mentioned seems to be just a plain media converter working on XGS-PON, the router is handling all the rest. As far as I've seen on Tweakers anyways. Might be that it works but as far as I've read online it won't, not unless the router OS is ready to be handling PON.

This answer is on the OLT-SFP on FS, not sure what the ONT does but looking at the comments in the thread linked to on Tweakers it's just not going to work.

Hi Paul, Thanks for your inquiry. For your questions, XGS-PON OLT and ONU, does it have management and SLA functionality? What is the best way to use these OLT/ONU modules? Is there a management layer for SLA (speed traffic shaping), etc? I'm sorry to let you know that #142707 can only realize the Optical and electrical signal conversion, and don't have the functions you described. Best regards,

This one will probably work but I'm not sure as I'm still not sure how PON works with own equipment and what to look for exactly: https://ecin.ca/xgs-pon-sfp-stick-module-xgspon-ont-w-t-mac-function-mounted-on-sfp-package/

Probably there is only one way to find out. 😎

Just check the price and unfortunately I am not ready pay so much for something what might will not work 😁

Yep, and then probably some import-fees by the Dutch customs as well. Expensive thing to try out.

Only reason this works out of the box is because the SFP is a complete ONT in itself and Pfsense has nothing to do with the PON-signal, it just gets a readymade signal from the SFP.

I am in contact with FS.COM

They are checking. May be they have something for better price.

Maybe we will get something.

I am almost there 🤣
