Ending KPN contract earlier than the end-date

I recently moved to a new home and the previous tenant transferred their KPN internet contract to me. Thinking that it would be easier to accept it than book with a new internet provider, I agreed. It got transferred.

But the contract is from 2026-2028 and I wouldn’t be here for that long.

When I checked properly, it says there would be a lump sum charged to cancel a contract before it ends.

My questions:

  1. Is there any way to avoid this?
  2. Can I reduce the contract duration to 1 yr (upto 2027) instead of 2 years?
  3. If I switch provider through free transfer service (like youfone) before KPN contract ends, would I still need to pay additional fee with KPN? Because once upon a time before I came to the new house, I had switched from youfone to KPN after a KPN employee visited and advertised it’s subscription benefits and said that the transfer could be done without any additional fee charged by youfone. Accordingly, there was no additional fee charged by youfone. I wonder if it’s possible with KPN as well.
  4. If I move out to a new place in the Netherlands or move out of Netherlands itself before the internet contract ends, will there still be additional fees charged?

Kindly clarify.

Hi there @Harizon ,

Welcome to the KPN community.

I’ll answer your questions so you know where you stand.

Question 1:
No, there is no other way to avoid the early termination fee other than simply letting the contract run until the fixed contract period ends.

Question 2:
No, you cannot change an active contract from a 2-year term to a 1-year term mid-contract.
This is only possible once your fixed contract period has ended and you are able to extend or renew the contract.

Question 3:
If you were to switch to another provider during an active contract—even using a switching service—KPN would still charge you an early termination fee for the remainder of the contract, as this constitutes a form of breach of contract.
So, while you could switch to a provider like Youfone, for example, you should bear in mind that you would be liable for an early termination fee covering the months remaining on your KPN contract.

Question 4:
If you move to a different town or city in the Netherlands during the fixed contract period, you can transfer your contract to the new address (using the moving service), provided KPN offers a fiber-optic or DSL connection at that location.

If you are moving abroad (emigrating), you can have your KPN contract terminated free of charge—meaning without an early termination fee.
However, you will need to provide KPN with official documentation, such as proof of deregistration from your current municipality.

I hope this clarifies things and gives you a better understanding of how KPN handles these matters.

In case I am moving within Netherlands to a different home, but I still don't want to continue KPN, is it possible for me to transfer this contract to someone else that I know in a different address who doesn't have internet yet? (Similar to how the previous tenant here transferred it to me?)

That way, the remaining contract is not breached right? That way, I don't think I would need to pay remaining fees.

In this way, is it possible for people to take a contract and if they don't need it for the full duration, keep transferring it to other people subsequently until the contract runs out?

Kindly clarify.

For KPN fixed services, transferring the contract to a different residential address is not immediately possible.
This is because a fixed internet contract is linked to a specific physical address—such as the one where you currently reside.

If the new contract holder lives at a different address, you should handle the situation as follows:

If the fixed subscription needs to move with you:
It is best to first transfer the subscription to the new address yourself via the KPN Moving Service, keeping it in your name.
Once the connection is active at the new address, you can initiate the contract transfer to the other person's name via the KPN website.

Hi @Harizon! Welcome to the community. 😊

I see that @Michel.uit.Arnhem has already explained how this works. You would first need to move the subscription to the new address in your own name. Once the connection is active there, the contract can then be transferred to the other person.

If you are planning to do this, I would first check whether KPN is available at that address and what type of connection is available there. This is also useful information for the person who would eventually take over the contract. You can check this on our website by entering the postcode and house number.

So it is possible to transfer a contract to someone else, but you cannot transfer the existing contract directly from your current address to another person at a different address.
