I recently changed mobile subscritions from Vodafone to KPN. Unfortunately, to my surprise, KPN's mobile connection in the city center is much worse than my previous provider. I get one bar inside buildings and maximum 2 outside in the city center. I have tried different devices (iPhone 17 and iPhone 12), I tried an eSIM and a regular SIM card, but it's all the same, unusable data to my SuperUnlimited+ subscription.

I am not sure what to do in this situation. I believe it has to do with the frequency KPN operates with, probably not very good in areas with many buildings. I wonder if KPN can provide business customers with signal boosters, if not I will probably have to go back to my old provider or find a new one that works well in my area.

Hi @Stefano Draghi

I'm sorry to read that you experience troubles with the KPN network. I would recommend you to set your Phone to 2G.

An employee/moderator of KPN will contact you also. Please place your personal data in your Profile. (privé)

Dear @Stefano Draghi

Welcome to the KPN community.

I understand that you recently switched from Vodafone to KPN (while keeping your number), and are experiencing a poor connection in Maastricht's city center after switching.

I've been investigating this for you to see what could be the cause.

First of all, KPN has a cell tower in the heart of Maastricht's city center. This tower is located on a roof on Grote Staat, in the city center of Maastricht.
This tower supports both 4G and 5G.
KPN uses the same frequencies as Vodafone, so that can't be the direct cause.

In addition, there are also KPN cell towers close to Maastricht's city center, specifically at the following locations:

* Achter de oude Minderbroeders, Jekerkwartier, Maastricht
* Grote Gracht, Statenkwartier, Maastricht

This ensures optimal coverage in Maastricht's city center on both KPN's 4G and 5G networks.
Coverage may be slightly poorer around Wilhelminasingel (Sint Maartenspoort).

When switching from Vodafone to KPN, it's always wise to reset your smartphone's network settings to remove any residual Vodafone information and any errors.

I also recommend doing this using the following steps:

iPhone (iOS):

* Open the Settings app.
* Tap General.
* Scroll down and tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
* Tap Reset.
* Tap Reset Network Settings.
* Enter your passcode if prompted and confirm the reset.

Android:

* Open the Settings app on your Android phone.
* Go to General Management.
* Tap Reset.
* Select Reset Network Settings.
* Tap Reset Settings or Reset and confirm your choice.
* You may need to enter your lock code to continue.
* After the reset, you'll need to reconnect to your Wi-Fi networks and re-pair Bluetooth devices.

It's likely that everything will work as usual again after resetting the network settings.

Switching your phone to 2G won't help much, as you'll no longer be able to use the internet on your smartphone, only make calls and send text messages.

Let us know if resetting the network settings helped and if you experience good coverage on both 4G and 5G again.

Hello @Stefano Draghi , thanks for your message and welcome to this Community :)

First of all, I regret that the switch has not yet brought what you might have expected. Are you also experiencing problems when making mobile phone calls? And would you be willing to run a speed test? I’m curious to see what speed you measure. How is the connection in other places besides Maastricht, do you experience a good signal there?

Have you been able to follow the stept that @Michel.uit.Arnhem mentions above?That's definitely a good advice and woth a try!

 Hi @Jan van KPN and @Michel.uit.Arnhem,

Thank you for the information. To give a bit of context, I installed the chip last week on Tuesday and immediately noticed the issue. On Wednesday, I called KPN klantenservice, I was told to try a different DNS setting from the default “internet” to “portalmmm.nl”. I since then reset the settings to default because I couldn’t do a hotspot with that.

I tried a variety of speed tests, at home, on my street, a bit farther away from the buildings, train station and on the train itself.

Speed tests results using Ookla Speedtest app:

Home (1 signal bar): from ~2 to ~10 Mbps

Street near house (1 bar): ~40 ~60 Mbps

Away from the building (3 bars): ~300 Mbps

Train station (2 bars): ~600 Mbps

Train moving (1 bar): ~80 Mbps (I don’t expect this to be very high, so that’s ok)

My assumption is that there’s either a blind spot near my house or something causing interference. The weird thing is that for both Vodafone and Odido the signal and speed are pretty good in the exact same location. I got a Klik&Klaar connection with Odido since then, and I’m getting from 600 to 900Mbps at home (I assumed the modem has a better antenna).

Anyway, I don’t know if there is a solution for this unfortunately.

Thank you again for your time

Stefano
