Only getting 600 Mbit/s on my laptop through ethernet with my 4 Gbit/s subscription

Hi,

I recently contracted the 4gbps optic fiber service from KPN.

I am checking the speeds:

- using the speed test inside the Router admin's page (developed by KPN itself) I reach 4gbps.

- when I run Speed Test (through Chrome) on my laptop plugged to the router by Ethernet cable on the 10gbps door, the result it around 600mbps.

- when I run Speed Test (app) on my mobile, 1 centimeter away from the router, connected via wifi, speed is 400 mbps. Same speed everywhere in my 45 square meters apartment.

Question is? How come router receives 4 gbps and delivers 600 mbps via Ethernet? What's wrong?

(I didn't even get to the wifi issue yet - 10 times slower).

I already reset the router but don't know what else to do...

1 - regarding the Ethernet cable directly on my laptop. I double checked the version of the cable and it's category 6. First problem appears here: I should get 1gpbs instead of 600mbps. My laptop Ethernet port receives max 1gbps.

What is the brand and type of network card in the computer? If it’s a laptop it could be that the card is advertised as 1Gbps but can’t reach it. There could also be some other factor in the way… Did you temporarily disable the virusscanner? A lot of virusscanner can slow down your network speed.

2- my Samsung a54 has wifi 6 and should get maximum speed of 2.4 gbps as per my research. Getting 600 mbps with the phone touching the router is a disappointment in my opinion, since I have 4gbps.

No. The most realistically speeds you can get with the A54 on wifi 6 is 400 to 600Mbps. I have the same phone. Just include A54 in your search and not just wifi 6. The A54 just isn’t powerful enough to reach those speeds with wifi.

3 - overall, found out almost no electronics at. Y house support more than 1gbps (internet of things - wifi 5ghz or 2.4ghz). So, as a suggestion to new kpn customer, don't hire the 4gbps service for a house, just for a company with servers. Your house cannot handle all this internet horsepower. I will downgrade to 1gbps too.

Yep. 4Gbps is in most cases overkill. Especially if you don’t have all the hardware that supports it (switched, computers, phones etc). And even then… 4Gbps is rarely needed. Only if you download a lot of films/music or have a lot (and I mean A LOT) of computers and devices which require speed all at the same time.

4- I tasted speed test in all ways : windows app, bronwser and android app. I never get more than 600mbps. I started thinking the issue is the router that kpn provides or they are capping my internet (most of people don't even test this).

You always need to test with a computer connected via cable. You can only reach multi-gig speeds if you have really advanced wifi equipment. For your computer… that should be able to reach 950/950 if all is correct and you have a 1Gbps network card. So try disabling the virusscanner for a moment (don’t forget to enable it again after testing).

There must be a way I can get 2gbps at least on my wifi, close to the router, in hardware wifi 6...

Yes, buy a Samsung S24 or higher (or other device which is powerful enough to reach those speeds. The A54 is not that.

What hardware is in your computer with which you check this (especially which network card)?

You also might want to test with the speedtest.net app from ookla (available in the Microsoft Store) and test outside the browser. Often browser will interfere in an accurate speedtest reading.

- when I run Speed Test (app) on my mobile, 1 centimeter away from the router, connected via wifi, speed is 400 mbps. Same speed everywhere in my 45 square meters apartment.

Testing with wifi, speed is never guaranteed. Too much chance of interference. Are you testing with 5Ghz? Wifi 6?

Hi @alvarosou , welcome to our community and thanks for your message :)

Great that you were able to find us this way and ask your question here!

The first piece of advice I’d like to give you in this case is to reset the fiber optic box by disconnecting it from the power for at least 10 minutes. I suspect that this will resolve the issue, and I hope you’ll share your findings with us here as well!

If that unfortunately doesn’t work, please also take a look at our Kennisbank, where we’ve written an article about this issue. You’ll also find several helpful tips & tricks there.
