Interesting bug in KPN TV+ App: Watch the program two hours in the future

Smart TV+ works as a time machine!

In my app at the TV, I see the current program highlighted and click it to watch - from the middle (expecting live translation). Initially, it shows the name of the program and progress bar. Click watch - and another program starts, the one that is two hour forward in the schedule. I.e. at 20:00 I can see the program scheduled at 22:00.

Looks like interesting option to receive the business news in advance...

What’s the time zone configuration of your device?

I’m also thinking this can be the reason. It is UTC+3.

Anyway, it is a strange behaviour of the app if it relay on TV settings in this topic. What if I set UTC-5? Or UTC+1.5? What if I change the date to tomorrow? My TV device should be zero-trust source for the app and server part.

Hi @Alex_q4309utsadklgfnsado, that is a very interesting issue you found. I didn't expect a different time zone on the tv would change the program you see. I've asked the developers about this, so they can take a look at this.

To check on my side, I have to re-install android at the TV, thus all apps will be lost. Thus, I haven’t done that yet.

There’s no other way to adjust the timezone of your tv? E.g. in a setup menu?

Spent 20 minutes yesterday searching for this option… Then asked ChatGPT, and it explained me the issue...

Since the app can only be used on your home address and therefor usually only used on tv's bought in the Netherlands, this wasn't something expected. Because of that this is a very specific and rare occurance, so it doesn't have priority for the developers. If it's possible to change the timezone on the tv, that would be the quickest solution.

This TV was bought in the Netherlands directly from Philips where I worked. It is used in the Netherlands. Historically, I’ve chosen the country to have menu in my native language: when installed, I was not aware that language can be switched easily later. Since then (~6 years) there was no other app which uses time zone from my TV! NO ONE in the World!
PS. Being the data scientist by profession, I would assume this as a bug in the software, potential threat for security (have no clue how, I’m not a hacker).

It doesn’t have a security concern, luckily. But it does cause an inconvenience for you when you want to watch something, I get that. Maybe it changes in the future, but now changing the timezone is the only way.

Well, it is easier for me to cancel KPN subscription, and return back maybe two years later.

Changing the timezone is probably quicker than 2 years. But it's not for me to judge, all I can do is explain the situation, I can't change it. I have forwarded it to the developers like I said earlier, and what I said was their response.

No problem at all, @Jasper van KPN ! I have NPO Start installed, and it works okeish. It includes major NL channels, thus I can survive.

Surviving is good, very important 😉. If that works without using the device timezone, that might be a solution in this specific case.
