Can I use my own router instead of KPN Box 12?

Hi,

Sorry to bloat this forum but I can’t find KPN phone support number anywhere!

My question is simple: can I connect any router to the KPN fiber terminal, instead of using KPN Box 12? The experience so far is very subpar for cloud streaming (high buffer bloat, no packet loss but bandwidth jumps up and down constantly). So I wanted to try a different, better router. Is that possible / allowed? Thank you!

You can of course use other routers, as long as you know they supprt VLANs and PPPoE.

There is more info in the topic below (in Dutch):

Yes, you are allowed to use a different router.

You can, for example, use the FritzBox 7590. It already has a KPN profile in it (KPN also rents them out, but you may want to buy one). In my experience this is a far superior router than the KPN Experiaboxes.

Thank you! Is it only possible to use router that have a KPN profile? I don’t think that I would want to use FritzBox as I need an OpenWRT router with SQM option.
