Remote station is not answering to LCP Echo requests

Hi!

I saw many posts with the same symptoms, but wasn’t able to find any tutorial or a solution. It would be nice to have some debugging tutorial to collect more information (Or a modem that does it automatically)

I only have one modem that does 3 wifi networks(2.4G, combined, 5G). I have 7 devices that connect to 2.4G or 5G, sometimes I use combined

I have KPN Box 12 and my internet often stops working, requiring approximately 5 minutes to reconnect(Sometimes it takes too long so I restart modem, it helps)

I noticed that it often happens when I open my work laptop that automatically connects to corporate tailscale VPN, it may be related. Then internet stops

When it happens, I go to modem UI (http://192.168.2.254/2.0/gui/#/) and look for logs. Modem reports that internet is not available and logs show an error
Connection has been terminated: remote station is not answering to LCP Echo requests.
Connection to the Internet has been terminated. (Reboot, Reconfiguration, forced termination)

I tried resetting my modem, I tried changing cables, but it didn’t help. Maybe I need to try doing something with a fiber box or try another modem

Could you please help me and advise what can I do to investigate it further and solve it?

I created a new post for it. Let’s close this one

Hi @krock21,

At this point, I would indeed suggest doing something with the fiber box; can you please disconnect the power for 2 to 3 minutes? That way, it will load the connection again and I hope this will fix the problem!

Hi @krock21, did you manage to give the fiber box a restart and what was the outcome? 🙂

Hi!

I will wait for the next outage and try it then

I did not have such issues for a while now

I can post updates here or you can close this thread and I will create a new one with an update

Ah, it's nice to know it hasn't happened for a while now 😊

If the exact same problem occurs, you can update here!

I just had an issue again. This time in the logs I see:

```
TR-069 connectivity to (hengelo0.cust.kpn.net) has been initiated
TR-069 connectivity to (hengelo0.cust.kpn.net) has been closed
```

I see this log every 2 hours, and just now internet dropped with it

I powered off fiber box for 3 minutes, but it didn't help

I suspect it may be a router issue (KPN Box 12). I will try to change it to my own one and see

Did you manage to test your own router yet @krock21

Hi!

Yes, just tested it and seems like it helped

With kpn box 12 I see issues every time I start tailscale vpn
Issues vary in size:

  • Sometimes the internet stops working completely, and I have to restart the router
  • Sometimes internet goes very very slow, and `ping google.com` shows me 30s
    • Sometimes it slowly goes down to 0 seconds, sometimes it stays at 30s and the internet is basically not working
  • Sometimes I see ping spike up to 5 seconds that goes down to 0 after 5 seconds. This is a best-case scenario

These symptoms apply to all devices that use internet, and to all connection types (wifi, cable, ...). Starting tailscale on my work laptop leads to internet issues on my personal laptop and phones

I changed the kpn box 12 to my huawei ax3, and I see no issues or ping spikes when connecting to tailscale anymore. It connects seamlessly, and seems like ping to some tailscale servers improved (was 200ms, became 10-30ms)
On some downsides I can't set 1500 MTU. The router doesn't have an option to do it, and I can only do 1492 MRU as the maximum value
I also couldn't get ipv6 on my router, but ipv4 works

One of my coworkers had the same issue and replacing kpn box 12 helped him, so my best guess now is that I got a faulty one

In the meantime, I will continue monitoring my internet and will post here if I see more issues

Let me debug it a little bit more. I connected kpn box 12 again and see no issues. Maybe it needs to be connected for some time to start producing them

Since you mention a coworker, are we talking about the VPN of your employer? My guess is it does have something to do with the combo Box 12- VPN, since you don't seem to experience problems when you're not using the VPN.

yes

Yes, by some reason kpn box 12 starts working poorly when vpn is switched. This is very random

I got the issue today. I will try to describe everything

I switched to the simplest setup 8 days ago: Kpn Box 12 connected to fiber box. All my devices connect to Kpn Box 12 wifi
I have normal dual-band wifi, and I have extra wifi enabled with separate SSID for 2GHz and 5GHz
My laptops use 5GHz one

8 days it worked well, with no issues

Today I opened my working laptop that started connecting to corporate tailscale vpn, and internet stopped working for all my devices. It didn't work for 5-10 minutes and then started working

I started `ping 192.186.2.254` and `ping 8.8.8.8` on both personal and working laptop soon after internet dropped. I started connecting my 2nd laptop with ethernet cable, but wasn't able to do it on time. I suspect it would have the same issues, I have some screenshots with pings that prove it

In the kpn box 12 logs I see that internet dropped without any logs, then my devices disconnected from wifi (cause no internet), then `Connection has been terminated: remote station is not answering to LCP Echo requests.` and `Connection to the Internet has been terminated.(Reboot,Reconfiguration,forced termination)` and `PPPoE connection successfully established with user credentials.` that fixed the internet. You see my attempts to connect ethernet cable too
pings from working laptop

pings from personal computer:

Kpn Box 12 logs during the event

Now every time I connect tailscale, I see internet interruption.
It wasn't like this last 7 days

Good call, since it's very clear now it only goes wrong when you use the tailscale VPN!
