Could you optimize the route to LATAM?

Hi team, I know this might be a long shot, but I thought it was worth asking anyway.

I've noticed that KPN is using NL-ix for routing/peering, and all traffic towards LATAM appears to go through the UK, then the US, and only afterward reaches LATAM. In contrast, other providers using AMS-IX seem to benefit from a more direct route—Amsterdam to Brazil—likely due to AMS-IX having peering with Level3.

This results in significantly lower latency compared to the current path used by KPN.

I understand this may be too technical or outside the standard BAU process for KPN employees checking the forum, but I figured there’s no harm in raising the question, right?

Would it be possible to escalate/check this request to the appropriate team for them to explore whether there’s any possibility to optimize the route to LATAM?

Apologies if this is out of scope—just trying my luck here and really appreciate your time in reading this!

Hi @furfix, you’re always welcome to ask questions and this is an interesting one.

I'm not sure whether optimization is possible. Sometimes there are commercial or technical limitations that limit us in routing more directly, but I'll forward this signal in any case. Who knows!

In the meantime, if a lower latency for this site is a priority for you, you could always use a VPN that would provide you with a more direct route. 🙂
I'm not too familiar with the different VPN options out there, just that there are many. Perhaps one will have the features you’re looking for!
