KPN Changed IP Address after 11 years after switch to Fiber

After 10 years waiting for fiber in my neighbourhood finally KPN came with an offer.

I book it and after a while they came to install it. Not with many issues finally today I have the fiber running.

Well, the monteur told me the IP address was going to be the same. I work in remote and my IP address is registered in many firewalls so it's very important for me.

But was not true, the external IP address changed and support does not have any clue about what I am talking about and there is no way to return back to my ip address.

So I asked I want to return back to DSL so I can get my IP back. They say it's not possible.

It's going to take me around 2 weeks of work to request the change of my ip address in all the systems I have it registerd.

Thanks KPN!

Hi @AnSaFu

Unfortunately the monteur was wrong. When changing from DSL to fiber the IP address will always change. You are connected to another part of the KPN network, with another IP range.

The migration DSL → Fiber is a one way road. There is no way back.

Officially your home connection has a dynamic IP address, but it hardly ever changes.
However, KPN can change it when necessary. The migration is one of these moments.

So I made a decision to switch based on wrong data.

BTW, the IP address assigned is based in the PPP/PPPoE link not based on the network you are in. There are no technical limitations related to topology, it's just a KPN policy.

Now, let's see how long it takes for KPN to repair the wall and electric cables broken during the physical installation.

Bad experience.

Je ip adres kan sowieso wel eens wijzigen. Gebeurt weinig. Maar je hebt officieel geen vast ip adres bij KPN.

Hi @AnSaFu, welcome to our community, I see your question has been answered. I'm afraid it's not possible to get your IP back. It's also not possible to go back to ADSL and that wouldn't bring the IP back either. As Marlon mentions, for a private subscription you technically have a dynamic IP adress and it could change. In this case that's what happened.

You're saying the technician broke a wall and electrical cables? Have you contacted my colleagues about that yet? You can schedule a call on our website on kpn.com/english

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for your words.

I accept that the former external IP address is not coming back, besides the fact it's not a technical question but a policy. In fact, the IP PTR record indicates both IPs are fixed as recommended by RIPE in the case they are fixed (ISP best practices).

Technically the IP is associated with the PPP or PPPoE session and may be perfectly linked to the user across KPN Network that is routed via layer 2 or 2.5.

Beside this question and my initial frustration on this regard, I have already communicated with all parties my IP change.
About the damage in the cables, I am expecting a monteur today so let's see what's happens, also I'd like to review the speed, I can not get more than 66mb/s via WIFI two meters away from the router.

From the contracting to the delivery, it's being a really bad experience.

I hope its changes for the good of KPN.

Thanks again,

ASF

@AnSaFu Your public IP address always changes when switching from DSL to fibre optic, because different Points of Presence are used.

Thanks TDN,

Good point and I understand that, but I was promise when I requested the change to Fiber that “everything” was going to be the same, including the external IP address.

If I would have known that 66mb/s and the IP change I would never asked for the change. My bad!

Weird taking into consideration I am the customer.

Greetings

ASF

Anything else changed @AnSaFu ? Another router and/or location? The migration from DSL to fiber concerns only the outside connection. Wifi should not be influenced by this migration.

It's no choice to stay on DSL when fiber is constructed in your neighbourhood. The complete DSL network will be disconnected.

As long as you stay with kpn on the current fiber connection you will keep the new IP.

realistically yes, but technically it's still a dynamic IP adress and it could change at any time. If you want the certainty of keeping your IP adress the same you'll need a commercial subscription
