Huawei Pro 30 can only connect to KPN Box's guest network

Hello,

I recently became member of KPN glasvezel network and I have a number of issues.

The main one is that my wife’s mobile phone, Huawei Pro 30 can only connect to the internet via the modem’s guest network. The phone can connect to the main wifi SSID (and any extenders of it) but it shows that there is no internet connection via this wifi network. Other mobile phones can connect without issues.  This thread shows a similar issue, but no actual solution.

Another issue is that I can’t access my cameras or cloud remotely (only if I ‘m in the house and connected to the KPN’s modem). I don’t know what settings (e.g. from beveiling) I need to set.

Any help is appreciated.

John.

@I K Huawei Pro 30 kan nog geen Wifi6, zet in modem op Wifi5 of tenminste bij Wifi6 WPA2 ipv van WPA3 of WPA3/WPA2 en deactiveer de PMF optie.

Hi @I K, welcome! Which of our modems do you have? Most work similarly, but there are some minor differences between them.

So, without knowing which one you have, I'll start with the more general advice to disable IPv6 in the modem, and see if that helps. You can find that in the modem interface under Internet connection > IPv6.

You can also, as TDN says, try changing some of the wifi settings and see if that helps. More info about the wifi settings in this article:

Hello. I have the KPN Box 12. The Huawei P30 can connect to the internet via the guest wifi but not via the normal wifi.

IPv6 has already been disactivated as I had issues with the VPN at work. If I connect my IP cameras to the Guest network I can access them from outside of the wifi (i.e. via 4G), too, not possible if I connect them to the normal wifi.

Can it be that the firewall rules don’t apply for the guest network?  My firewall settings are custom based on medium with the exception of allowing sftp which I needed.  I tried ‘Standard’, ‘Medium’ and ‘High’ security levels, without any result.

I also tried to switch to Wifi 5 as TDN advised, set to WPA2 or deactivate PMF option, without any result.

@I K Main network and guest network have different subnet (default 192.168.2.x and 192.168.3.x). Maybe the Huawei gets the wrong ip address. Can you make screenshots of main network en guest network settings en the status page of Huawei?

Indeed Huawei gets IP 192.168.3.2 from the guest and the main network.

So how do I fix this? I set a static IP to the phone 192.168.2.XX using 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.2.254 as a gateway and the 2 DNS IPs I found under Internet connection, but no result.

Don't use static IP in your phone but DHCP IP reservation in KPN modem. Turn random MAC adres off in the Huawei. But some settings are wrong in the KPN modem, can you put the screenshot of the setting of main network (DHCP range, subnet and gateway)

@I K The modem settings look good. What are the wifi settings in the Huawei? Auto of static IP? Don't use static, but go to IP address reservation in the modem, and give the Huawei (MAC adres) a fixed ip address in the range 192.168.2.xxx. Can you put the screenshoot of the setting of Huawei?

Hello. Tried what you suggested. In Home Network → Reserve IP addresses I added the Huawei giving it 192.168.2.80 e.g. after having assigned the device’s Mac address to its settings, instead of a dynamic. Still no progress! :(

@I K Without details of Huawei settings, we can't see wat are wrong. Is "Using Device MAC” enable in the Huawei (or "Using random MAC” disable)? Wat are the settings of wifi connection?

But it’s not only the Huawei. Also the wifi cameras; when I pair them to the Guest network I can access them from 4G, when they are connected to the normal network, no. And I have 3 cameras. So, the problem is not with Huawei or the wifi cameras, but with the differences between the normal and the guest network. What are these?

Can you try to turn off "DHCP authoritative" option? Maybe with this option, the DHCP server of guest network overrules the DHCP server of main network and your devices wil get 192.168.3.xxx from guest network

I ‘m assigning a static IP to the Huawei, 192.168.2.80. But it still cannot connect to the internet.

Do you have any additional network devices, @I K? Like access points, switches and so on?

I do have wifi repeaters. One repeater is connected to the main network, the other to the Guest network. The P30 can connect to the internet only if it’s connected to the Guest network, either directly to the Box 12 or via the repeater connected to Guest. The wifi cameras that are connected to the Guest network are accessible via 4G. Those connected to the main network can only be accessed when the phone is connected to the main wifi network.

I pose the unanswered question again. What are the differences between the main and the Guest network? Firewall settings maybe?

Guest network gives no access to your homenetwork .

Your camera’s should normally be connected to your homenetwork.

Why do you use the guestnetwork?

Guest wifi is exactly that, wifi meant for guests, people that should not have access to the rest of your network. It is not a network that you use for your own devices. So, make sure your camera's are all connected to the main wifi. If needed, you can activate the Extra Wifi network. This is an additional main wifi, but one where you can choose whether you want to use 2,4 GHz, 5 GHz or both. Additionally, for the camera's you will probably need to set some port forwards. How that works you can see here:

Then, circling back to the main problem of your Huawei not being able to connect to the main wifi. Or rather, connecting to the wifi, but not the internet. Which version of the KPN Software is running on your Box 12? This is listed below the image on the login page.

Right, that is the most recent version, so that is good. I'm a bit stumped as to what the problem could be. There was an IPv6 bug in the previous version, but that is no longer the case in this version. And also, you have IPv6 disabled so it's not a factor to begin with.

At this point I'm leaning towards a full reset and starting over. Reset your modem by pressing the reset pinhole for at least 30 seconds or use the reset option under Settings > System. While it is resetting, remove the saved network info of the wifi network in the phone. After the modem has fully started up again (give it half an hour to be sure), try if the Huawei can connect to the main wifi, and if it has internet.

The thing is that I ‘m a newcomer to KPN, so the router was with factory settings. So, I have these issues since the beginning of connecting to the KPN network. I didn’t have these issues with my previous ISP, ziggo. Both cameras and mobile phones, were connecting to the internet without issues and without the need to create port forwarding settings (which I need yet to try together with resetting the modem, hoping that it won’t make things worse). :(

Hmmm, that really only complicates matters further, @I K. Because if most or all of the settings were and are still factory, I have no explanation.

So, did you change the name of the wifi networks in the modem, or are you using the factory defaults for that?

I did change the name of the wifi, being the same as the previous, ziggo, router. Can this be that the phone is confused? But still, the IP subnet is different. Anyway, I plan to reset it this weekend and see.

Could be that this confuses the phone, indeed. When you reset, also reset the wifi network in the phone (the forget-network option) and restart the phone. Just to be sure it can start fresh.
