Always lose connection when connecting to Tailscale VPN

I was pulling my hair trying to understand why I lose connectivity to my devices whenever I travel, until I found this topic. The only change is that I turn on Tailscale on all my devices before traveling so I can access them remotely. And it always results in losing internet connectivity completely.

I can’t remember exactly which ExperiaBox I have right now, because I got a new one a couple of years ago, so it’s either a 10 or 12.

I’m currently abroad and it happened again in the span of 6 months (two business trips), I lost connection to even my door bell which doesn’t use a VPN. And all my devices are disconnected. What are my options now? Because I definitely don’t want to in the dark while I’m abroad about the state of my house.

Hi @SpeedyGonzales, welcome back. Are you currently back home? Can you check which modem you have, and what firmware is currently on that modem. For that, please open the webinterface. If you see a picture of your modem in the middle, then you've been migrated to the new KPN Software. The version number is listed below.

If you see a different login screen, then you are still on older firmware.

@Erik van KPN  I’m back home now, it’s ExperiaBox 10 and this is what I see when I log in to the web interface.

This is the router info

Model H369A

Hardware Version V1.00

Software Version V1.01.00T04.4Intermediate

Thanks, Speedy! This is the older version of the firmware. I'm not aware of any existing issues with that firmware that could result in the problem you're having. Regardless, it seems that in the other topic, the problem was solved by migrating to the KPN Software. That Software is available for your modem type, so I would expect you to either already have it, or to get it shortly. Are you using any wifi extenders from us? SuperWifi or Experia Wifi?

I have one Experia Wifi

Right, would you fill out your forum profile and reply here when you've done so. I'll see if we can get you migrated to the new Software.

@Erik van KPN done.

Thanks, @SpeedyGonzales. I've put you through for manual migration some time next week. I was having some trouble reading your devices, so I do recommend you give the V10 and the Experia Wifi a full reset this weekend, to make sure they are optimally prepared for the migration.

@Erik van KPN I think my ExperiaBox firmware has been updated, the admin UI now looks completely different.

But my wifi now is a total disaster after the update… This is my phone the whole day today.

If the UI looks different, the update has been successful @SpeedyGonzales!
But it's not okay that you’re having wifi issues now 😑What happens when you disconnect the Experia Wifi? Does the wifi from the modem work properly then? With the new software, the wifi from the modem will not be turned off if the Experia Wifi is connected, but I'm not sure it's working the way it should right now.

When you open the login page for the UI, do you see this button?

If so, what does it show for your Experia Wifi?

@Maja van KPN which button?

I'm sorry @SpeedyGonzales, I placed a screenshot but apparently it did not upload correctly 🤔

@Maja van KPN I have the button and clicking on it shows this

As far as I understand the new UI only supports showing SmartWifi as extenders but not ExperiaWifi so ExperiaWifi will show up as a normal device and not as an extender.

Experia Wifi should show up here, when upgraded to the new KPN software @SpeedyGonzales. Could you please reset the Experia Wifi, when it's connected directly to the V10 with an ethernet cable? I hope that changes things!

@Maja van KPN did a reset, still doesn’t show as an extender, only as a regular device on the network.

Ok, spoke too soon. Seems like it’s updated now and is showing up as an extender. But I can’t access it’s web UI (I assume that’s by design, but just want to double check)

I’m glad to hear it’s updated now @SpeedyGonzales 🙂

When your Experia Wifi has the new software, it's part of the mesh network and it automatically takes over all of the wifi settings from your modem. So if you want to change anything about the wifi, you should change the wifi setting from the modem itself. It’s also possible to use the 'Mijn Wifinetwerk' tab in the MijnKPN app

How is your wifi now that the Experia Wifi is also updated?

@Maja van KPN sorry, missed this message earlier. I think the network now is stable, and everything works fine. Now the real test will be when enabling tailscale and how it will handle this, which is the main topic of the thread.Â
